:NotGeese: Signal From Europa - Dusty Monuments (2016) EN
The family of post-rock bands whose name is generated according to the sth-from-sth pattern (Tides From Nebula, Gifts From Enola) and gives an impression of something connected to the cosmos (yes, I know, Enola Gay was the name of the plane that delivered the atomic bomb to Hiroshima but still, this event was of cosmological importance) got bigger thanks to the Gdańsk-based Signal From Europa. Not only do they match the names and complete the weird, epic poem/nursery song, their music is equally good too.
Inspired by the sci-fi classic - "2001: Space Odyssey" and the post-rock classics (not mentioned by their names but it's an easy guess) they present us with absolutely interesting music. Apart from their ability to draw space soundscapes and balance between the atmospheric and the loud they are also really good at something else: they agree the cosmic ambiance of their music with clearly guitar-based music - no electronics, no keys, pure strings. But still it's clear that no-one will hear you scream.

Do rodziny post-rockowych kolektywów, których nazwa wygenerowana jest według schematu "coś z czegoś" (Tides From Nebula, Gifts from Enola) i pachnie przestrzenią kosmiczną (tak, wiem, Enola Gay to samolot, który dostarczył bombę atomową nad Hiroszimę ale to zdarzenie też było dość kosmicznej wagi) dołączył w tym roku zespół z Gdańska. Nie dość, że pasuje nazwą i wieńczy ten dziwny, epicki poemat skrzyżowany z dziecięcą wyliczanką, to nie odbiega zupełnie muzycznie.
Inspirowani klasyką sci-fi - "2001: Odyseją Kosmiczną" i klasyką post-rockowego grania (nie wymienionego z nazwy ale nietrudno zgadnąć o kogo może chodzić) prezentują szalenie ciekawy materiał. Poza umiejętnym kreśleniem kosmicznych krajobrazów i balansowaniem między nastrojowością a hałasem rzuca się umiejętność pogodzenia bez wątpienia, jak pisałem, kosmiczności muzyki wyraźnie gitarowym charakterem kompozycji. Nie ma tu elektroniki i klawiszowych pasaży, ogłuszającą ciszę przestrzeni zagrano na strunach i wzmacniaczach. A mimo to czuć, że nikt nie usłyszy jak krzyczysz.

The Best Pessimist - The Half-World (2015) EN
The best pessimist comes from Odessa, Ukraine and looks as if he started doing his music when he got bored with symphonic metal riffs. Or viking reconstruction. Or modelling. His name is Sergey Lunev, his band consists of three other musicians, and they all combine piano with clearly electronic ambient with post-rock elements. And every one of the elements is extremely noticeable.
Lunev's inspirations include The American Dollar, French Teen Idol and Mono, although the last one maybe just for their mysticism in music. And this music tells the stories about broken hearts and goodbyes - you can feel it in every note, every beat and every sudden silence. Now you should put a long black coat on and go out with TBP's music in your ears into the autumn darkness. And try not to think too much.

Najlepszy pesymista pochodzi z Odessy na Ukrainie i wygląda jakby za ambient zabrał się przypadkiem, gdy znudziły mu się symfoniczno-metalowe ostre riffy. Albo wikińska rekonstrukcja. Albo modelling. Nazywa się Siergiej Łunew,a towarzyszy mu trzech muzyków, którzy wszyscy łączy grę na pianinie z mocno elektronicznym ambientem i elementami post-rocka. I wszystko to bardzo, bardzo wyraźnie słychać.
Inspiracje Łunewa obejmują The American Dollar, French Teen Idol i Mono, chociaż ci ostatni to chyba za mistyczną atmosferę zawartą w muzyce. A muzyka ta opowiada o złamanych sercach i rozstaniach, można to poczuć w każdej nutce, w każdym elektronicznym bicie czy niespodziewanej ciszy. Należy teraz ubrać długi czarny płaszcz i wyjść z muzyką TBP na uszach w nasz polski jesienny mrok. I starać się za dużo nie myśleć.
Mam nadzieję, że spotkam się z jego muzyką dziś w nocy we śnie.

DakhaBrakha & Port Mone - Khemleva Project (2012) EN
DakhaBrakha is surely widely known among Polish fans of alternative folk music, especially since their legendary concert during OFF Festival in 2014. But for me Ukrainian music is first of all them. DB is three ladies and one gentleman from Kiev, Port Mone, a vital part of "Khemleva Project" is three artists from Belarus playing instrumental mix of jazz and ambient with bass guitar and accordion. It appears that they are the perfect music partner for DB.
Perhaps that is why the album mesmerizes with the very first sounds. Rhythmical and looped backgrounds are a match for folk chanting by the Kovalenko, Garenetska, Tsybulska trio. Traditional instruments solo parts catch attention and, as they are supposed to, release the hypnotic spell while the way the songs are constructed are quite modern. A real folk music masterpiece, which is actually something more. Waiting for the next concert in Poland!

Większość fanów alternatywnego folku w Polsce z pewnością zna DakhęBrakhę, zwłaszcza od czasu legendarnego już koncertu na OFFie w 2014 roku. Jednak dla mnie muzyka z Ukrainy to przede wszystkim oni, a nuż może ktoś nie zna? DB to trzy panie i jeden pan z Kijowa. Port Mone, który jest częścią "Khemleva Project" to z kolei trzech artystów z Białorusi, grających na co dzień instrumentalną mieszankę jazzu i ambientu na akordeonie. Wychodzi na to, że to idealny muzyczny partner dla folkowej DB.
Być może dzięki temu płyta hipnotyzuje od pierwszych dźwięków. Rytmiczne i zapętlone tła współgrają z folkowymi zaśpiewami tria Kowalenko, Garenecka, Cybulska, solówki poszczególnych tradycyjnych instrumentów przykuwają uwagę i należycie rozpraszają hipnozę, a konstrukcja utworów cieszy współczesnością. Prawdziwy folkowy majstersztyk, który jest czymś zdecydowanie więcej. Czekam na kolejny koncert w Polsce.

Endless Melancholy - A Quiet Recollection (2016) PL
W tym tygodniu wycieczka na zieloną Ukrainę. Na początek ciężka sprawa - niekończąca się opowieść gdy opowiadasz sobie przeszłość, za którą rwie ci się serce. Melancholia. Niektórzy mają ją we krwi i w kościach ale Endless Melancholy i jego muzyka potrafi wywołać ją i w najoporniejszych. Oleksiy Sakevych pokazuje nam świat wypełniony muzycznymi krajobrazami wygranymi na pianinie. Nie wszystkie są przygniatająco smutne ale to właśnie tak działa melancholia. Piękne wspomnienia smutne są tylko dlatego, że są już tylko wspomnieniami.Kiedy najlepiej smakują (i wspomnienia i płyta)? Tak jak sugeruje sam artysta w utworze numer 10: podczas cichych świtów i szarych zmierzchów.
"A Quiet Recollection", jak wskazuje sama nazwa, jest swoistym The Best Of tego kijowskiego artysty. A było w czym wybierać, bo jego dyskografia jest imponująca i liczy już ponad 20 różnych wydawnictw.
Płytę wydało 1631 Recordings, możecie ją dostać za darmo (chociaż za taką muzykę warto dać coś od siebie).

This week we travel to Ukraine. To start with - something heavy, a neverending story when you think about the past that makes your heart bleed. Melancholy. Some have it in their blood and in their bones but Endless Melancholy and his music can trigger it even in the most resistant ones. Oleksiy Sakevych shows us the world full of soundscapes played on piano. Not every one of them is crushingly sad but this is how melancholy works. Beautiful memories are sad only because they are already memories. When is the best time for them (for the memories and the music)? As the artist suggests in the track number 10: during quiet dawns and grey twilights.
"A Quiet Recollection", as the name suggests, is a The Best Of compilation of the Kiev-based artist. And there was a lot to choose from as his discography is very long, over 20 albums already.
The album was released by 1631 Recordings, and you can get it for free (but for such a good music you could give something from you).

Clara Engel - Visitors Are Allowed One Kiss (2016) EN
Swans! Swans everywhere! Swansong presents an album swarming with swans. Dark folk, slow bedroom pop, shadowy singer/songwriter music, it doesn't match the artist's name. Bright angel (clara - (lat.) "clear, bright, famous", Engel - (nie.) "angel")? Her voice is angelic, no doubt but the massive acoustic guitar strings and quiet drums, ambients, xylophones lurking somewhere in the background create very intimate and hardly bright spectacle. If the artist uses a lot of lights when performing than, well, she shouldn't.
Not to mention Engel's lyrics. About uneasy spirit (as far as I remember, angels with uneasy spirits didn't end up extremely well), about love for an evil queen, about restless love. "Crepuscular hymns" as she described her music sums it up very well. The things you think about when you can't sleep.
I can hardly refrain from comparing Engel to Anna von Hausswolff who I wrote about recently. Less Swedish pagan vibes but the atmosphere at least equally dense.
But where are the swans? They are present not only in the first track. The artist gathered musicians from all over the world to record the album. And some of them are the top league artists - Aidan Baker from Nadja and Thor Harris - yes, the member of the famous Swans. The thing he did in "Swallow Me" is pure poetry written for flute, marimba and vibes.

Łabędzie, łabędzie wszędzie! Łabandzi Śpiew prezentuje płytę, która się od nich roi. Dark folk, niespieszny sypialniany pop, mroczna muzyka spod znaku singer/songwriter, całkiem nie pasuje do nazwiska piosenkarki. Świetlisty anioł (clara - (lat.) "czysta, jasna, sławna", Engel - (nie.) "anioł")? Głos bez wątpienia anielski ale masywnie brzmiące struny gitary akustycznej i czające się gdzieś w tle cicha perkusja, ambienty czy ksylofony to bardzo intymny i mało świetlisty spektakl. Jeśli na koncertach artystka używa oświetlenia to... nie powinna.
Nie mówiąc już o poezji Engel. O nieznającym spokoju duchu (z tego co pamiętam anioły z taką przypadłością nie kończyły za dobrze), o miłości do królowej zła, o niespokojnej miłości. "Wieczorne hymny" jak sama określa swoją muzykę to świetne podsumowanie tematyki. O takich rzeczach myśli się nie mogąc zasnąć.
Nie mogę nie porównać Engel do goszczącej tu niedawno Anny von Hausswolff. Mniej szwedzkich pogańskich wibracji ale nastroju co najmniej tyle samo.
A gdzie te łabędzie? Oprócz pierwszego utworu czają się jeszcze dalej. Na swojej płycie artystka zebrała muzyków z całego świata, w tym z pierwszych stron muzycznych magazynów - Aidana Bakera z Nadji i... Thora Harrisa - tak, tak, członka poważanych i u nas Swans. To co zagrał w "Swallow Me" to poezja rozpisana na flet, marimbę i wibrafon.
"Visitors Are Allowed One Kiss" kosztuje 20 zł ($5) i jest dobrym zakupem. Sprawdźcie.

Cigarettes After Sex - I. (2012) EN
I can't wrap my head around one thing. A band that published only six songs, most of them four years ago, thanks to the Internet hype comes from El Paso, Texas to Europe on regular basis and makes tonns of fans ecstatic. But still, I think it's wonderful because CAS is a phenomenon.
Dream pop dark like the most bitter chocolate is a dream come true when corresponds with your life and destroys your heart when this life transforms into memories. You can only love it, even if through tears in your eyes.
I could write more, that they are inspired by Cocteau Twins, that there's no softer material in the world than Greg Gonzalez' voice or that there's supposed to be new album coming. But it's enough to listen to CAS and stop thinking about anything else. And then go to their concerts, even if you risk getting your heart chopped up.

Och, jednej rzeczy nie potrafię ogarnąć rozumem. Zespół, który wydał łącznie sześć utworów, w tym większość cztery lata temu, dzięki internetowemu hype'owi przyjeżdża regularnie z El Paso w Teksasie do Europy i uszczęśliwia tym rzesze fanów. A i tak uważam to za wspaniałe, bo CAS to fenomen.
Lubieżnie ciemny jak najbardziej gorzka czekolada dream pop, który jest spełnieniem marzeń, gdy współgra z twoimi przeżyciami, a miażdży serce, gdy przeżycia transformują się we wspomnienia. Można go tylko kochać, nawet jeśli przez łzy w oczach.
A mógłbym pisać więcej, że inspirowali się Cocteau Twins, że nie ma na świecie miększej materii niż głos Grega Gonzaleza albo że już zaraz pojawić się ma nowy materiał. Ale wystarczy posłuchać CAS i nie myśleć już o niczym innym. A potem wybrać się na kolejne koncerty w Polsce 14 grudnia w Krakowie i 16 w Warszawie - nawet jeśli komuś miałoby to wyrwać serce.

Fatal Nostalgia - Hyacinthe (2016) EN
Isn't it an uber cliche? Look. First I am "With You" but then I behave like a narcissist ("Hyacinthe"), I become "Without You" and everything ends with a flying "Crow Spirit". I mean it would if the artist was honest and the nostalgia really was fatal. Because then there's "Moksha" at the end - a hindi term for liberation. A story is simple but still nobody believes it - even the worst things pass. At least in one way or another.
FN is post-rock with ambient influences from US. With some tolling keys and a little bit of louder parts. It's obvious - nostalgia is many different emotions that fight with each other. The artist describes themselves as dealing not only with nostalgia but also "nature, youth, romanticism, lost innocence" - Young Werther would be pleased. Even though the lore can be seen as pretentious the music is still good. Melodic keys put on rather dreamy background with a lot of drums - post-rock in its top form.
"Hyacinthe" is available for free (but you'd better give them something, you never know when would you need brothers in nostalgia).
Fatal Nostalgia - Hyacinthe (2016) PL
Czy to nie jest super-typowa historia? Spójrzcie. Najpierw jestem z tobą ("With You") potem zachowuję się egoistycznie zapatrzony w siebie ("Hyacinthe") i zostaję sam ("Without You") i wszystko kończy się ulotnością ducha ("Crow Spirit"). To znaczy tak by było, gdyby zespół był prawdomówny i jego nostalgia naprawdę byłaby śmiertelna. Bo na samym końcu znajduje się "Moksha" - hinduski termin na wyzwolenie. Historia prosta, a mimo to nikt nigdy w to nie wierzy - nawet najgorsze mija w ten czy inny sposób.
FN to amerykański post-rock łączący elementy ambientu, podzwaniania klawiszami i mocniejszego depnięcia. Oczywiście, nostalgia to zmienne emocje, nacierające na siebie w każdej chwili. Artysta o sobie mówi, że poza różnie pojmowaną nostalgią, w swojej muzyce zajmuje się też "naturą, młodym romantyzmem i straconą niewinnością" - młody Werter byłby zachwycony. O ile lore wydawać się może pretensjonalny to sama muzyka się broni. Melodyjne klawisze nałożone na dreampopowe tło i dużo perkusji - post-rock w bardzo dobrym wydaniu.
"Hyacinthe" można mieć nawet za darmo (chociaż lepiej coś niecoś z siebie dać, nie wiadomo, kiedy ci się przydadzą bracia w nostalgii).

:NOTGEESE: Rainy Summer - Koniec lata (2015) EN
Summer's long gone (the album name translates as "Summer's End") and when it was still here, it wasn't particularly rainy. But still, the album fits this time now better than any other. Adam and Piotr from Stargard gave us the most autumn-ish from the summer-ish albums. It's perfect for this time when summer's energy slowly turns into autumn melancholy and drags the guitar post-metal into ultra sad shoegaze. There's no place for Lush's candy-like melodies - metal clouds of guitars dominate the landscape with occasional, just like the grey sun in the sky, glimpse of whispering growling - if this phrase is not a blasphemy of some sort.
When you check their YouTube you can find their cover of Mgła - Polish black metal legend. Not only couldn't be the metal band's name more suitable for RS's lore (mgła means "fog") but Mgła in more post- than black-metal version sounds perfect.
But the point is that throughout the whole album you can feel rain and it's wonderful.
"Koniec lata" can be bought for 1 EUR. It's worth it.
:NIEGĘSI: Rainy Summer - Koniec lata (2015) PL
Lata już dawno nie ma. A gdy jeszcze trwało nie było chyba specjalnie deszczowe. A mimo to ta płyta pasuje teraz jak nigdy. Adam i Piotr ze Stargardu zaserwowali najbardziej jesienną letnią płytę. Najbardziej pasuje tam, gdzie letnia energia powoli zamienia się w jesienną melancholię i ciągnie gitarowy post-metal w stronę przesmutnego shoegaze'u. Nie ma tu miejsca na cukierkowe podrygi Lush - dominują metalowe chmury gitar, zza których czasem, jak szare słońce na niebie, przebija szepczący growl. Jeśli to określenie nie jest jakimś świętokradztwem.
Na YouTube'ie usłyszeć można jak RS coveruje Mgłę - legendarny polski zespół blackmetalowy. Nie dość, że nazwa metalowców jak nic pasuje do lore'u RS to jeszcze Mgła w bardziej post- niż black-metalowej wypada wspaniale.
A przede wszystkim, przez całą płytę na wskroś słychać deszcz i to jest piękne.

we.the pigs - EP (2016) EN
Something less overwhelming to finish the journey through the country of the three crowns. After all, even in Scandinavia it's sometimes sunny, the sky is blue (as it is on the album cover) and people want to live. Why "pigs"? In Swedish you call someone who as a sweet tooth "a sugar pig" and someone who's dirty that he is dirty like a pig. Is there a better way to define shoegaze? Dirty with guitars, with sweet and melodic vocals. It's melodic ("Fly" is catchy as hell) and noisy - shoegaze classic.
Their inspiration comes from "the art of being bored", interests involves long drinks (popular in Scandinavia cocktails with little alcohol (up to 15%)) and their favourite music bands are the shoegaze gods: Ride, My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. w.tp is less airy than MBV but more lively than Ride. Shoegaze is not very homogenous and thus it's so fascinating. Pop but not pop.

Na zakończenie wędrówki po kraju trzech koron coś mniej przytłaczającego. W końcu nawet w Skandynawii świeci słońce, niebo jest błękitne (patrz okładka płyty) i czasem chce się żyć. Czemu świnie? Po szwedzku na wielbiciela mówi się cukrowa świnio, a na brudasa (tak jak u nas), że jest brudny jak świnia. Czy można wyobrazić sobie lepszą definicję shoegaze'u? Gitarowo brudny ze słodkim i melodyjnym wokalem? Jest melodyjnie ("Fly" wpada w ucho jak, właśnie, jak mucha) i głośno - shoegaze'owa klasyka.
Ich inspiracja wynika ze "sztuki bycia znudzonym", zainteresowania obejmują long drinki (koktajle o niskiej zawartości alkoholu (do 15%), bardzo popularne w Skandynawii), a muzyczni idole to tuzy shoegaze'u Ride, My Bloody Valentine czy Slowdive. w.tp to mniej eteryczne MBV a bardziej skoczna wersja Ride - shoegaze jest mało homogeniczny i dlatego tak fascynujący. Niby pop a nie pop.

Kammerheit - The Nest (2016) EN
Ambient dark like Swedish polar night with influences of industrial from the country known for its iron ores. Kammerheit - ambient classic, started a decade ago with "The Starwheel", this year gave us joy (metaphorically speaking, very metaphorically) with a new album. "The Nest" is as hypnotic and dark as other works of Pär Boström (as the music from Umeå is really called). A second after second you're wondering why you are so anxious, so certain that there's something terrible that's going to happen very soon, and then you realize that you have the earphones on and it's the music that pump you up with the feeling.
This music tastes of iron, just like blood on the tip of your tongue.
"With The Nest, Pär takes us on a subterranean journey through enormous halls of unfathomable depths, and with the new opus he demonstrates once again why he’s become one of the most respected artist in dark ambient". That's what's written on Kammerheit's Bandcamp. I could hardly do anything but agree and let his music befuddle me more. A while or one hundred years ore.

Ambient mroczny jak szwedzka noc polarna z elementami industrialu z krainy znanej z żelaznych rud. Kammerheit - ambientowy klasyk, który zaczynał dekadę temu albumem "The Starwheel", w tym roku ucieszył nas (metaforycznie, bardzo metaforycznie) nową płytą. "The Nest" jest tak samo hipnotyzująca i mroczna jak inne dzieła Pära Boströma, (tak naprawdę nazywa się pochodzący z Umeå muzyk). W każdej sekundzie zastanawiasz się skąd ten niepokój, przeczucie, że zaraz stanie się coś strasznego, a potem uświadamiasz sobie, że masz na sobie słuchawki i to muzyka wpompowuje w ciebie to uczucie.
Muzyka ta ma żelazny posmak jak krew na języku.
"Za pomocą "The Nest" Pär zabiera nas na podziemną wędrówkę po ogromnych halach niedających się zmierzyć głębin i dzięki swojemu najnowszemu dziełu pokazuje po raz kolejny dlaczego stał się jednym z najbardziej szanowanych artystów dark ambientu". To fragment opisu płyty na Bandcampie. Nic tylko przytaknąć i dać się zamroczyć jego muzyką jeszcze chwilę albo sto lat.

Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous (2015) EN
The compass with a violin key needle says: "north". This week Sweden. Rich not only with pagan black metal and blonde pop stars, trust me. To break the ice (accordingly to the geographical location) - Anna von Hausswolff and her band. A unique character of the Swedish music scene, just like Karin Dreijer, erratic like Antony Hegarty, aerial like Kate Bush. A gothic songwriter who performs in churches and sings about love with the devil. The gothic part of her is perfectly audible everywhere in her works. Worrisome pop, dreadful folk, rock&roll played on church organs - that's what she sounds like.
"The Miraculous" shows a questionable miraculousness. It's as miraculous as a possessed girl who walks the walls, as a stone angel opening his eyes, as Madonna's bloody tears. Miracles, no doubt, but are they miraculous? I don't know. The album is epic where it should be, funeral-like and claustrophobic in other places. And above the sounds of the Addams Family orchestra planes von Hausswolff's both strong and airy vocal.
House wolf? Actually yes - a beautiful and domesticated black mass.

Kompas z kluczem wiolinowym zamiast igły wskazuje północ. W tym tygodniu Szwecja. Bogata nie tylko w pogański metal i blond gwiazdki pop, zaufajcie mi. Na pierwszy ogień (prawdopodobnie lepszym określeniem byłby "pierwszy lód") Anna von Hausswolff z zespołem. Szwedzka osobowość na scenie muzycznej, jak Karin Dreijer, nieobliczalna jak Antony Hegarty, eteryczna jak Kate Bush. Gotycka songwriterka koncertująca w kościołach i śpiewająca o miłości z diabłem. Gotyckość słychać wyraźnie na każdym kroku, niepokojący pop, straszliwy folk, rock&roll na kościelnych organach - tak brzmi Götebożanka.

Cuda niewątpliwie, czy cudowne, nie wiem. Na płycie jest epicko, gdy trzeba, gdy trzeba to pogrzebowo lub klaustrofobicznie. A nad tymi wszystkimi dźwiękami orkiestry rodziny Addamsów prześlizguje się jednocześnie mocny i eteryczny wokal von Hausswolff.
Domowy wilk? W zasadzie to czemu nie - piękna i udomowiona czarna msza.

Across the Snow - Ghost Ships (2014) EN
The solo project of the young Jackson Harden of Provo, Utah. Check out the images in Google after typing in this name. There's a huge Wasatch Range towering above the city. You can only imagine how it is to live your life in its shadow, how it teaches humility and wonderment over the biopowers. You can sense those frosty gods from the mountaintops in Harden's music.
Ambent beauty of AtS music resembles breaking through the snow when frost's crunching under your boots and your nose's getting numb from cold. And apart from that there's nothing there, just the white static. Ambient.
Exactly like under the surface of water, in the depths of arctic seas. It's important because the album tells the stories of ghost ships from XVIII century SS Octavius to the quite recently spotted at the coasts of Alaska SS Baychimo. You can hear it in AtS's music when the ships stops being mute with the pulsating radar or their bottom meeting the underwater rocks.

Nad miastem wznosi się wielki, ośnieżony masyw Wasatch, można sobie tylko wyobrazić jak dorastanie w jego cieniu uczy pokory i zachwytu nad biosiłami. W muzyce Hardena słychać tych mroźnych bogów mieszkających tuż pod sklepieniem niebieskim.
Ambientowe piękno muzyki AtS przypomina właśnie przedzieranie się przez śnieg, gdy pod butami chrzęści śnieg, a policzki drętwieją od zimna. A poza tym nie dzieje się nic, jest tylko biała statyczność. Ambient.

Fireflies - Goodnight Stars, Goodnight Moon (2007) EN
Fireflies but something different than Polish Świetliki ("fireflies" in Polish)'s poetry. Warm like a piece of superjune night transferred to the plush-like place next to the window, behind which a blizzard wrecks havoc. Warm thanks to the warmth of Lisle Mitnik's voice, lo-fi, full of gems of surprising keys. Like fireflies in a dark, dark night. Climate related metaphors are quite justified as Mitnik grew up in the tundras of New Anglia and started writing his songs after he moved to California. So maybe he rather brought his cold, northern nature to the warm places. He definitely combined fire with ice/ice with fire.
Painfully beautiful lyrics about broken heart and the past that disappears right behind the corner are precisely what should be sung with the music of this kind's accompaniment (listen to "We Heard the Fireworks" and try not to think about this one time in your life after which your heart has never fully recovered, good luck).
Not enough? Listen to Firefly's covering "Cherry Blossom Girl", the most bitter-sweet song from the beginnings of this century. Originally by the French duo AIR, obviously.

Świetliki ale inne niż poezja pana Świetlickiego. Ciepłe jak kawałek superczerwcowej nocy przeniesiony do pluszowego kąta przy oknie, za którym panoszy się zamieć śnieżna. Ciepłe ciepłem głosu Lisle Mitnika, akustyczne, pełne kryształków pojawiających się znienacka klawiszy. Jak ogniki świetlików wśród czarnej nocy. Klimatyczne metafory nie są nieuzasadnione, Mitnik wychował się w tundrze Nowej Anglii, a piosenki zaczął pisać po przeprowadzce do Californi. Czyli może raczej zimną, północną naturę przeniósł w gorące strony. Tak czy inaczej, pogodził ogień z lodem/lód z ogniem.
Boleśnie piękne teksty o złamanym sercu i przeszłości, która znikła zaraz za rogiem są dokładnie tym, co powinno znaleźć się w akompaniamencie takiej muzyki (posłuchajcie "We Heard the Fireworks" i spróbujcie nie pomyśleć o tym jednym wydarzeniu w waszym życiu, po którym wasze serce nigdy się nie pozbierało, powodzenia).
Mało? Posłuchajcie jak Fireflies coveruje "Cherry Blossom Girl", najbardziej słodko-gorzki utwór początku tego wieku. W oryginale oczywiście francuskiego duo AIR.

:NOTGEESE: tsar - tsar (2015) EN
Tsar - a real new bomb (pun intended and megatonal). What's more, it is a really appropriate new bomb when everything that is called "new" and "Polish" has to be some kind of electropop. Meanwhile, tsar gives us loud guitars and clear melodies. Songs that could be singer-songwriter hits but unfortunately met overdriven guitars. Flagship indie post-rock example - but these are not so popular in Poland. Not so much promising ones anyway. They sounded great even on the acoustic and delicate Sofar in Kraków where they managed to show emotional post-rock amid the gentle music.
It's loud, with guitars, but also, unfortunately, short. We have to wait for more (Polish K MAG says so too so we really have to).
You can pay how much you want for "tsar" but helping the guys from Szczecin is recommended.
:NIEGĘSI: tsar - tsar (2015) PL
Tsar - to prawdziwa nowa bomba (pun zamierzony i megatonowy). Więcej, to właściwa nowa bomba. W momencie gdy "nowe polskie" to głównie electro-pop - tsar stawia na głośne gitary i wyraziste melodie. Piosenki, które mogłyby być singer-songwriterowymi hitami, ale miały pecha trafiając na przesterowane gitary. Sztandarowy indie post-rock, mało go jednak w Polsce, a na pewno mało tak obiecującego. Dobrze zabrzmieli nawet na akustycznym krakowskim Sofarze, gdzie wśród muzycznie filigranowego towarzystwa pokazali emocjonalny post-rock.
Jest głośno i gitarowo ale też, niestety, krótko. Należy czekać na więcej (a mówi tak również K MAG więc nie ma co do tego wątpliwości).
Za "tsara" zapłacić możemy ile uważamy, zaleca się jednak wspomagać szczecinian.

Girių Dvasios - Ratu (2015) EN
Getting back to the small stage hidden in a forest of Mėnuo Juodaragis, the Lithuanian Music festival. This time, the dark night is torn apart by the electronic music of Girių Dvasios. "Electronic" is kind of a broad term - the artist's music combines elements of ambient and dub with Lithuanian folk. Greasy backgrounds and pulsating beats match surprisingly well with looped ethno vocals. The choires, namely Trys Keturiose and Kūlgrinda, sing "sutartinės", the very essence of the Baltic folk - repetetive and trance providing chanting.
Girių Dvasios literally means "spirits of the forest" and it actually fully describes the DJ's work. If witch doctors were to dance around bon fires today getting high with smoke and rhythmical music, they'd do it to music of the Lithuanian artist. Above you there are treetops swinging, around you there are your brothers and sisters swaying with burning eyes and your feet just can't wait and have to dance. What are you going to do?

Powracam na małą, schowaną w lesie scenę na litewskim festiwalu Mėnuo Juodaragis. Tym razem ciemna noc rozrywana jest elektroniką Girių Dvasios. Elektronika to trochę ogólnik - muzyka artysty łączy ambienty i dub z litewskim folkiem. Tłuste podkłady i pulsujące bity pasują zadziwiająco perfekcyjnie do zapętlonych etno zaśpiewów. Chóry, dokładniej grupy Trys Keturiose i Kūlgrinda, wyśpiewują "sutartinės", esencję bałtyckiego folku - monotonną i wprawiającą w trans.
Girių Dvasios oznacza "leśne duchy" i to w zasadzie wyczerpująco opisuje twórczość didżeja. Gdyby szamani tańczyli dzisiaj wokół ognisk, narkotyzując się dymem i rytmiczną muzyką robiliby to do dźwięków Litwina. Nad wami kołyszą się korony drzew, wokół wirują wasi bracia i siostry z rozpalonymi oczami, a nogi rwą wam się do tańca. Co robicie?

House of Wolves - Daughter of the Sea (2015) EN
If I was to choose miss of moody and thrilling vocals, I would undoubtedly pick Rey Villalobos and his high-pitched whispers. The vocalist of a great band The Coral Sea ("Ah. Ah. Ah." anyone?) publishes under the name that is a literal translation of his surname. That's why there's a metal name while the music is as far from being metal as it can be. It's delicate and beautiful, there's hardly better adjective to it. Full of pain and love and every other item from a spectre of feelings. And there's acoustic guitar, "vintage grand piano, laid-back drums & mellotrons dusted throughout" as it's written on his Bandcamp. What else can you wish for?
Among his inspirations, Villalobos enlists Chopin, when he was younger, he studied classical music. Apart from unique voice, the attention of a listener of his music draw dark melodies and soul-stirring lyrics.
"Feel like getting your heart broken this afternoon? Give Rey Villalobos‘s new material a few moments of your attention" compliments YVYNYL and you could hardly disagree.

Jeśli miałbym wybierać miss nastrojowych i wywierających ciarki wokali, bez wątpienia wskazałbym na Reya Villalobosa i jego wysokie szepty. Wokalista skądinąd genialnego zespołu The Coral Sea (ktoś zna "Ah. Ah. Ah."?) publikuje pod nazwą, która jest bezpośrednim tłumaczeniem nazwiska Californijczyka. Stąd metalowa nazwa, a muzyka tak daleko od metalu jak to możliwe. Spokojna i piękna, trudno użyć innego przymiotnika. Pełna bólu i miłości i całego spektrum emocji. A do tego gitara akustyczna, "vintage'owe pianino, wyluzowana perkusja i zakurzony melotron" jak pisze na swoim Bandcampie. Czego chcieć więcej?
Villalobos wśród swoich inspiracji wymienia Chopina, a w młodości studiował muzykę klasyczną. Poza unikalnym głosem uwagę w jego kompozycjach przyciągają mroczne melodie i wzruszające teksty.
"Masz ochotę na złamane serce? Poświęć chwilę uwagi nowemu materiałowi Villalobosa" zachwala YVYNYL i trudno się z tym nie zgodzić.
